Earlier this year, the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) met with Erin Motkin's students in the Jackson Library to learn about a reading program she developed. She regularly arranges for her certified therapy dog Moby to visit her class. The students read to him and thrive in his judgement-free zone. Watch the video to learn more!

First graders in Mrs. Rosen's class made Piggy puppets in the library today. Next week they will work with a partner to read the dialog in a Piggy & Elephant book using dramatic expression!
The Jericho librarians participated in the NY Library Assoc. - School Librarian's Section Conference this past Friday in Huntington, NY.
The keynote speakers were both excellent. With humor, Ellen Oh shared stories of her childhood as a low-income Korean-American who grew up in Brooklyn, where she claims libraries saved her life by affording her access to books. Still, it was confusing to her that almost every character she read about was a white child, leaving her with the impression that “white was better.” When she read The Joy Luck Club about a girl from an immigrant family (even though it was Chinese, not Korean), it transformed her. She believes it’s essential that children’s literature reflects the experiences of all children; different ethnicities, interests, religions, socio-economic backgrounds, etc. For this reason, she founded "We Need Diverse Books" (WNBD), a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing diversity in children’s literature. The other keynote speaker was Pernille Ripp, a teacher, author, blogger, and founder of "Global Read Aloud." She believes teachers need to provide ways for students to develop compassion for others in their local community as well as in different parts of our country and the world. She suggested ways technology can be used to provide opportunities for students to directly communicate and build relationships with others far away. Her annual Global Read Aloud is one way to do this. After attending several worthwhile professional development sessions, my colleagues and I hosted a poster session titled "Leveraging Technology to Make Literacy Cool." It afforded us an additional opportunity to network with school librarians from across the state and share some of our best ideas. |
