Time flies in the summer! It's hard to believe our last day of school was almost 4 weeks ago. Many days are filled with outside social activities, but it's nice to plan some quiet time to read. I always bring a book or magazine with me to the beach and find that to be very relaxing. On the other hand, wait times in a doctor's office seem to go much faster if I'm reading a good book. I also enjoy listening to books on my phone when I'm driving or walking for exercise. That's reading too!
I read a mix of adult and children's books and enjoy the variety. Yesterday I read Real Friends by Shannon Hale. It's a memoir of the author's experiences with friends during her years in elementary school. It's often funny, sometimes heart-breaking, but always feels genuine. The illustrations by LeUyen Phan meld perfectly with the dialog and narrations to capture the emotions and daydreams of the characters, and the nuances of girlhood friendship drama. If you haven't read a book in graphic format, or assume they are always silly fluff, try this book. You'll be glad you did.
