The Hour of Code is a worldwide movement that strives to expose millions of students to learn the basics of coding and encourage them to consider careers in the field of computer science. Students in over 180 countries will participate in Hour of Code activities during Computer Science Week (December 4th - 10th). You can read more about it on the Code.org website.
Students at Jackson will be working in the library with a partner to write code for a game-like program. The tutorial activities are designed to challenge students to think logically and creatively, and to persevere to solve problems. Some classes will be using the app "codeSpark Academy with the Foos" to learn the basics of coding. It is currently the #1 program designed to teach coding to students 4-9 years old. The tutorial activity they will be using teaches the programming concepts of sequencing, parameters, and loops. In one advanced module of the app, children will write code for a multiplayer snowball game. Other students will be using the Minecraft Hour of Code activity that is found on the code.org website. This new "Hero's Journey" activity/tutorial uses game elements from the widely popular Minecraft game to introduce computer science coding concepts in a fun way. By participating in the Hour of Code here at Jackson, we hope to provide children with an additional opportunity to think critically, work collaboratively, and gain confidence in their abilities to tackle difficult tasks.... all while having fun! We all hope your children will come home with stories of their success and new enthusiasm for coding!

After watching a video about rural, suburban, and urban communities, our second graders discussed the types of buildings, homes, institutions, and scenery that can be found in each type of community. They were excited to work in groups to create mini-murals that showed their understanding.
