On behalf of the Jackson faculty and students, I'd like to thank all of the PTA volunteers who worked so hard to make this year's Book Fair a huge success! The children loved the way the library was transformed for the fair and enjoyed the preview day when parents read aloud to each class in the library. A special thank you goes out to chairpeople Ms. Jalichan and Mrs. Pressman for their attention to all the details that made the fair so special.

Parents: I recently finished reading Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan. It's a complex story in which a harmonica and its music are used as the common thread to link a fairy tale and 3 other powerful stories about children in crisis. The author uses an unusual mix of fantasy and historical fiction to reveal the true nature of these young people who face the challenges of life with heroic courage and heart. Friedrich, a Jewish boy facing the wrath of Hitler's new laws in pre-WWII Germany, Mike, a Pennsylvania orphan trying to protect his little brother amid the hardships of The Great Depression, and Ivy, the daughter of Hispanic migrant workers who faces social injustice after Pearl Harbor; what could these characters possibly have in common? The answer will surprise you and fill your heart.
If you choose to listen to the audio book as I did, you will have the added pleasure of hearing the music that blends the stories together. Recommended for 5th graders and up. Parents: Click HERE for an independent book review by Common Sense Media. |
