It's amazing to me to ponder the fact that over 15,000 books circulated in and out of our little library this year!
It's always a thrill for me to see the excitement on our youngest student's faces as they tell me how happy they are to borrow a favorite "Piggy and Elephant" book; or hear middle grade students beg to be added to the wait list for a popular title that all of their friends have read. The joy of reading is a gift that lasts a lifetime, but too often isn't discovered until later in life. Jackson students are fortunate to have wonderful selection of books in their school library, and a staff of caring adults who encourage reading, suggest book titles, and share their experiences of the pleasure of reading a favorite book. This, in turn, encourages students to talk to each other about the books they have enjoyed. Believe me, there is nothing so motivating as having a classmate enthusiastically promote a book. And that happens in our library every day! Beginning on June, 12th, our students will be permitted to borrow 5 books at a time to read over the summer break. The library will be open for a half day in July and again in August to provide the opportunity to exchange those books for different titles. Additionally, we hope all of our students will take advantage of the wonderful resources and summer activities available at the Jericho Public Library. The importance of reading over the summer months cannot be over emphasized. Children need to practice their reading skills in order to maintain the progress they have made during the school year and prevent the summer slide about which we are so often warned. So, Jackson students: Get your permission slip signed and borrow some special books to read this summer. Reading can take you on adventures to places that will stretch the limits or your imagination! Read and have fun!
